Kim Jong Un, chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea, chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, oversaw a test-fire of ground-to-ground intermediate-range strategic ballistic missile Pukkuksong 2 on February 12.
Prior to the test-fire, he viewed the self-propelled ballistic missile launcher local defence industry workers made by their own effort, technology and wisdom.
He appreciated the caterpillar vehicle as he familiarized himself with its technical specifications. And he gave his thanks to defence research institutes, armaments establishments and relevant sectors for their contribution to the production of the vehicle by ensuring a meticulous arrangement of production, control and supply of parts of cooperative production—against all odds.
At the observation post he checked the test plan before giving an order to fire.
With a thunderous explosion, Pukkuksong 2 soared into the sky letting out blinding flames.
The missile was fired at a high angle in consideration of security of neighbouring countries.
The Supreme Leader was overjoyed to see the nuclear-capable missile climbing up into the air for a long while, a scene demonstrating the independent strength and indomitable spirit of the intrepid Korean people. The previous type of the missile had been launched underwater from a strategic submarine.

He lavished praise on the defence scientists and technicians who carried out the Party’s combat order to the letter in a short span of time and worked a miracle of succeeding in the first test-fire.
This test is a meaningful event in the development of the country’s rocket industry, he said. And he added that the local rocket industry has fully transformed from liquid-propellant motor into high-thrust solid-propellant one and it has significantly developed into an innovation-driven one beyond the previous copy-based one.
The development of the new weapon system, he said, allows the People’s Army to fulfil its strategic mission most accurately and rapidly in any space under the sea and on the land.
He also described the successful test-fire as the most sincere gift of patriotism and loyalty the defence scientists and technicians have presented to Chairman Kim Jong Il on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
After the test was over, he had photographs taken with the scientists, technicians and servicemen who participated in the launch test.
