The Disarmament and Peace Institute of the DPRK Foreign Ministry on February 12 published a report dedicated to the undying exploits Chairman Kim Jong Il had performed in ensuring peace and security in the Korean peninsula and the world, to mark his 75th birth anniversary.
Thanks to Songun politics administered by the Chairman, not a sound of gunfire of war has been heard over the past several decades in the Korean peninsula and the local people have enjoyed a peaceful and stable life, the report said.
In the 1990s when socialism collapsed in the former Soviet Union and some East European nations, the US emerged as a sole superpower in the world and intensified military moves unprecedentedly to invade the DPRK which held fast to the banner of independence and socialism invariably, while resorting to every attempt to stifle it in all fields of politics, the economy, ideology and culture and diplomacy.
The DPRK built a great defence capacity by dint of Songun politics administered by the Chairman and frustrated the growing military pressure and war threats from the US and its vassal forces by relying on its military power, it said, citing the resolute self-defensive measure to completely withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on January 10 2003, the first underground nuclear test in October 2006 and the second underground nuclear test in May 2009 as examples which helped markedly reduce the danger of war in the Korean peninsula.
The report also referred to the Chairman’s great exploits for establishing a lasting peace-keeping mechanism in the peninsula.
The DPRK government directed constant efforts to establishing a solid peace-keeping mechanism, including the proposal for concluding a DPRK-US peace pact in March 1974 and that for establishing a new peace-keeping mechanism to prevent the recurrence of war and ensure durable peace in the Korean peninsula in April 1994, and took an active part in multi-party talks including the four- and six-party talks for peace and security in the peninsula and the discussion of their agenda items, the report said.
Such historic June 15 Joint Declaration and the October 4 Declaration, grand reunification programme common to the nation which enables the Koreans to ensure peace in the peninsula and reunify the country under the ideal of By Our Nation Itself, were also provided as the Chairman wisely led the struggle to hasten national reunification and ensure peace and security in the peninsula by the concerted efforts of the north and south, it noted.
The report said his undying exploits for peace and security in the Korean peninsula and the world shine more brightly today thanks to Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
On the basis of scientific analysis of the situation in which the stand-off between nuclear powers surrounding the Korean peninsula was pronounced more than ever before after the advent of the Obama administration advocating “pivot to Asia-Pacific”, he put forward the new strategic line of building up the economy and nuclear force in parallel and prevented the outbreak of nuclear war with a series of tougher policies to rapidly develop the nuclear force, it said.
In August 2015 when a hair-trigger situation was created along the Military Demarcation Line he proactively proposed holding a north-south high-level emergency contact to overcome the crisis spiralling up to an armed conflict, it said, adding he also wisely led the struggle to prevent war and achieve lasting peace in the Korean peninsula.
Given that the DPRK’s national power has been further strengthened and the improvement of inter-Korean relations and national reunification have emerged as an urgent demand of the times that brooks no further delay, it will be reasonable for the US and neighbouring countries to respect the DPRK’s strategic position and will to reunify the country independently and adjust their policies accordingly, if they want durable peace and security in the Korean peninsula and the region, the report stressed.
