The Tanchon area in South Hamgyong Province in northeast Korea is famous as a world magnesite field.
On the inexhaustible mass of high-grade magnesite ore stretching deep underground there stand the Taehung Youth Hero Mine, Ryongyang and several other mines.
The Taehung Youth Hero Mine is a large opencast mine with a deposit of billions of tons of high-grade magnesite. The Ryongyang Mine, also known as “gold mine”, is reckoned as the best in light of ore deposits and grade and has surface workings as well as a stope with a large-scale modern tunnel structure. They have a great production capacity and have promising prospects. They have their own bases for producing magnesia clinker.
Near these mines are the Tanchon Magnesia Factory, Songjin Fireproof Materials Factory and other magnesite processing factories.
The engages in the export of various magnesia products manufactured at these industrial establishments.
The mines and processing bases under the 60-odd-year company annually turn out millions of tons of magnesite, hundreds of thousands of tons of magnesia clinker and light burned magnesia, tens of thousands of tons of electrocast clinker and talc, and other magnesia products.
The magnesia products in high demand on local and foreign markets are exported to different countries via Tanchon and Kim Chaek ports with a cargo traffic capacity of millions of tons.
The company has channelled great efforts into putting the magnesite industry on Juche basis. In the course of this it ensured the domestic production of fuel based on locally abundant anthracite, thereby laying a solid foundation for increasing the production of quality magnesia products which are in good demand on international market.
In keeping with the changing international demand, it flexibly modifies the grade of the products and mechanics of production according to particle size. It exports magnesia products of second- and third-stage processing and works to promote trade with countries in Europe and Southeast Asia.
