Japan which denies its past crimes has experienced a hot agony of shame in the international arena.
The US Supreme Court recently dismissed a suit filed by a Japanese ultra-right organization to remove the monument dedicated to the memory of sex slaves in Glendale, California.
The monument portraying a Korean girl who was forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese imperial army is widely known to the world as a symbol of denouncing the crime of sexual slavery committed by the imperial Japanese army.
Japan, which had been hell-bent on invading Asian countries in the past century, abducted or seduced local women from occupied areas and forced them to serve its soldiers sexually in order to “stimulate the fighting spirit of its troops.” The Korean victims alone numbered as many as 200 000.
In an effort to censure the heinous unethical crime, along with Japan which is denying it, the monuments are now built in Europe and America to say nothing of the aggrieved countries.
Such an international trend has reached the US, the closest ally of Japan, resulting in the erection of the monuments including the one in California.
Nevertheless, Japan is stubbornly denying the crime, which was clearly proved by historical records and through victims’ testimonies, even though it has been over seven decades since its defeat in WWII. Moreover, it openly lets loose such a reckless remark that the sexual slavery victims “turned to prostitution for commercial profits”.
In the bilateral negotiation held in December 2015 over the sexual slavery issue, south Korea agreed to cover up the crime in return for Japan’s paying of a little sum of money to the survivors. Japan is now urging south Korea to remove the monuments there.
The only way for the Japanese government to resolve the issue is to officially admit the crime and make a sincere apology and reparations for it.
If Japan continues to behave brazenly looking away from this, it will come under international criticism.
