The US is ratcheting up sanctions against Russia.
The US Senate recently passed a bill on imposing new sanctions on Russia with an overwhelming majority vote. It also reportedly agreed on setting up a procedure for thwarting any attempt to scale down the sanctions.
And on June 20 the US Department of Treasury announced 38 persons and entities are put on the sanctions list. Among them are Russian’s two civil servants and their two aides, vice-minister of economic development and a member of the Federation Council who is special presidential representative for cooperation with overseas compatriots’ organizations. The targets also include arms traders and the 11 objects in Crimea the US continues to claim as belonging to the Ukrainian territory.
The bid for new sanctions will seemingly inflict damage on the European countries that maintain economic relations with Russia, especially their businesses involved in a gas pipeline project between Russia and Europe.
For this reason, these countries are vocal in their objection to the US bid.
No sooner did the US Senate announce the decision than the German and Austrian foreign ministers published a joint statement to denounce the new sanctions for violating international law and jeopardizing the energy security of the EU, stating that they would not accept the attempt at “illegal and extraterritorial sanctions.”
They also said that the US bill only pursues the aim of sidelining Russia from the European gas market and gaining the upper hand, urging the US not to mix political sanctions with economic interests.
The German Economic Minister warned that his country would take retaliatory measures in case Trump ratifies the bill, while the EU Commission and France demanded the US deal with the sanctions issue through the consultation with its European allies.
Meanwhile, Russia takes a tough stance, announcing it would take countermeasures.
The US has also pursued an extremely hostile policy against the DPRK and threatened it with nukes. It is clinging to barbarous, tough sanctions and pressure on the pretext of the DPRK’s exercise of right to self-defence.
Reality shows that no country is exempt from US sanctions even when its high-handedness and arbitrariness are connived at and followed.
