The US is stepping up the drive to modernize military hardware allegedly to cope with the DPRK’s ICBMs.
A website of The Washington Times said on July 12 the Pentagon plans to invest billions of dollars in updating missile defence systems and it is expected to use $1.5 billion out of $7.9 billion to be invested in the ground-to-air and Aegis ballistic missile defence systems for updating 36 ground-to-air MD systems all over the US.
The US Department of Defense issued a directive to defence industrial conglomerates to submit drafts of new air-to-air interceptor missiles that are five times faster than the existing ones within two weeks and ordered them to step up the programme to make and deploy them in active service through tests at the earliest possible time.
US congressmen have competitively picked out the obsolete Star Wars plan and hurriedly work out a bill to invest tens of millions of dollars in resuming it.
The problem is that their hustle and bustle are too late.
Prestigious military experts and the international community are of the opinion that it seems impossible for the US and any other countries to intercept the DPRK’s ICBM.
Why then is the US making so much fuss about it?
Australian lawyer James O’Neil posted a comment on website “Dissident Voice” on July 17, which has grabbed the public limelight.
He said the US repeatedly argues over the “north Korea threat” and its important purpose is to justify the US military presence in East Asia and contain and besiege China it regards as the greatest challenger to its bid for hegemony.
His arguments were evidenced by CIA director Pompeo.
At an event which allowed media coverage he said China constitutes a grave challenge to the US and its strong economy and steadily growing military capacity pose the greatest menace to the US. Scott Swift, commander of the US Pacific Fleet, in a lecture on July 27 said if Trump issues an order, he is ready to launch a nuclear strike on China even next week.
It is fair to say that US military buildup is aimed at containing the potential rival in East Asia and seeking military upper hand in the region.
