The Pyongyang Municipal Sanatorium for War Veterans has splendidly been built at the foot of Mt Ryongak.
The construction project was completed in 100 days since groundbreaking.
Built on an area of over 6 000 square metres, the sanatorium consists of a two-storey main building with a total floor space of some 3 000 square metres and open-air resting places.
The building is designed in the shape of a star and is in good harmony with the nearby scenery.
The interior exudes classic beauty as it has been done with tiles and other finishing materials that are elegant and soft in ground colour. It is tranquil and appealing to suit the psychological features of the elderly war veterans.
The recreation centre is furnished with some 20 bedrooms, rooms for physical exercise, medical treatment, massage, amusements and reading, barber’s, beauty parlour, bathroom and dining room.
“I feel as if I regain my youth as I have a refreshing shower bath at the pool in this sultry weather and stroll along the Lake Unjong,” said 89-year-old Yun Thae Sop from Kangdong County, Pyongyang.
The inmates can play such folk games as janggi (Korean chess) and yut (four-stick game) in the amusement room on the first floor.
“Every morning and evening, the elderly cross the stone corridor bridge extending from the sanatorium to the Lake Unjong for a stroll,” said Ri Song Sil, directress of the sanatorium.
“We elderly are hard to move our arms and legs freely. To provide us with every convenience, handrails are fixed on the walls and the government shows close concern for our living including the matter of meals. Nurses and other staff here are very scrupulous and hospitable. It is really a palace,” said Ryang Jin Ryong, a 89-year-old from Ryongsong District, Pyongyang.
