“Since Trump made reckless and violent remarks that defame the DPRK’s top dignity and threaten us at this platform, I think it is fair to make a response in the corresponding tone at the same place,” DPRK Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 23.
He described Trump as a mentally deranged person full of megalomania and complacency and as a gambler who he said has grown old wheeling and dealing to get even a patch of land.
“We will hold him accountable for more than what he said, more than what he could imagine,” he said.
As regards the subject of the plenary session, he said that it is imperative to realize genuine international justice in order to ensure the people of each country enjoy a peaceful and satisfactory life.
He denounced the US for posing nuclear threat to the DPRK for as many as seven decades in the name of the UN and in defiance of the norms of international relations.
He staunchly defended his country’s nuclear deterrence, saying that it is a self-defensive measure taken as an ultimate option with the understanding that unless international justice is ensured strength should only be confronted with strength. Thanks to this, he added, the DPRK’s war deterrent has been boosted in favour of peace and security on the Korean peninsula and beyond.
He attributed the UN’s failure in playing its role to realize genuine international justice to the old undemocratic attitude of the UN Security Council, saying that it is the UNSC that is at the beck and call of its permanent member states.
The UNSC has adopted illegal and double-dealing resolutions which prohibit only the DPRK’s satellite launch and nuclear test and condemn only the DPRK’s nuclear programme as “threat to international peace and security”, a reason behind the sanctions on the DPRK, he noted.
He called on the UN member nations to remain independent in assessing the legality, fairness and morality of the UNSC resolutions. And he pointed to the fact that a national committee has already been in force in the DPRK to survey the damages caused by different sanctions measures.
In conclusion, he extended full support and solidarity to Cuba, Venezuela and Syria in their struggle to protect their sovereignty, ensure international justice and maintain stability.
On the sidelines of the meeting, he met with the UN Secretary-General, his counterparts of Cuba, Belarus and Sweden, UN-based ambassadors of Bolivia, Kazakhstan and Senegal, president of the 72nd session of the UNGA and administrator of the UNDP respectively.
On September 22, he addressed the ministerial meeting of G77 at the UN headquarters.
He referred to the DPRK’s efforts to achieve the goals on the 2030 sustainable development agenda, which was adopted at the summit held on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN, and the grave challenges by the US which hinders such efforts and tries its best to strip the DPRK of its rights to development and existence as well. If such US acts are still tolerated, it will be hard to hit the SDGs, he stressed.
