There was a national folk music contest in August in Pyongyang, drawing over 300 members of artistic motivational teams and art squads from factories and other industrial establishments and cooperative farms across the country.
The art squad members of Pyongyang Department Store No. 1 won the ensemble prize with kayagum ensemble “Moran Hill”, contributing to making Pyongyang top the group rankings in the contest.
They wonderfully interpreted the song which sings of Moran Hill noted as a scenic attraction since ancient times and the development of Pyongyang into a beautiful and magnificent modern city.
Starting with a fascinating tune in the high-pitch note, they gave a lifelike representation of the optimistic life of people with a good harmony of lyric melody of the song punctuated by beautiful trills, soft sound of kayagum, and various tunes of janggo (hourglass drum) and other drum which add to the national flavour.
Pyongyang Department Store No.1 is well known for having won national working people’s singing contests and folk music contests several times.
Through art squad activities in the evening and merry recreation parties at breaks, all the employees have learned to play more than one folk musical instrument.
They conducted vigorous art squad activities with an eye to maintaining their high profile at the recent folk music contest.
After selecting a folk song, they renewed the form of performance by involving more national musical instruments like high- and low-pitched flutes, small haegum (four-string fiddle), drum and jangsaenap (Korean brass wind instrument) than the previous ones based on kayagum and janggo.
Jury members as well as audience lavished praise on them as over 20 men and women employees sang the song well while skilfully playing national musical instruments and performing dances as well.
“While conducting mass cultural and artistic activities we have come to realize the advantages of folk music and feel national pride and self-confidence. We felt again in the recent contest that the Korean folk songs are the best and so is our tune,” said Jon Kyong Hui, who has been an art squad member for over 20 years.
