South Korea’s ruling and opposition parties are busy reorganizing political circles before the local election to be held next year.
The ruling Democratic Party is talking about the merger with its splinter Party of People, while the Liberal Korea Party is aiming at the extension of party influence through absorption of some Justice Party members and reunion of conservatives.
Meanwhile, the Party of People and the Justice Party are working toward political solidarity to ensure a two-party system.
The Democratic Party and the Liberal Korea Party have buckled down to the reorganization based on their political foundation and organizing ability, whereas the Party of People and the Justice Party are working to keep their fragile existence.
If the Democratic Party succeeds in the merger with the Party of People, it is likely to win the local election and take the firm initiative in administering state affairs and create favourable conditions for democratic reformists to remain in power. Even if the merger bid fails and the present political structure with one ruling party and three oppositions is maintained, the Democratic Party will get similar results.
On the other hand, if the Liberal Korea Party’s unity of conservatives or the collusion of centrist conservatives between the Party of People and the Justice Party is achieved, the conservatives will reassemble centring on the Liberal Korea Party and challenge the democratic forces in next year’s local self-governing body election, parliamentary election in 2020 and presidential election in 2022.
The moves of political reorganization will gather momentum in the future.
