Sexual discrimination is still a social headache worldwide.
An American online dictionary service provider recently said last year’s most searched keyword is “feminism”, a 70 percent increase as against the figure in 2016.
Reportedly the word “feminism” has become a buzzword since American women launched demonstrations in Washington DC last year, prompting the alleged “MeToo” campaign around the world.
This suggests that sexism is very serious in the US and other capitalist countries and there is an increasing awareness of feminism around the world.
American women are said to be most vulnerable to sexual harassment. Most of working women are subjected to sexual violence and misconduct. There are very few openings for women and even the employed are complaining about harsh discrimination.
This is not a story of the US alone.
More recently, a woman who worked for BBC in charge of Chinese edition resigned by herself in protest at what she saw as sexual disparity in wage compared to a man of her level. This has highlighted the severity of sexism and misogyny in the United Kingdom.
According to the UK’s central department of statistics, about two million people had experienced domestic violence in England and Wales for a year until March last year, and 1.2 million of them were women.
In Italy, 114 women lost their lives due to domestic violence between January and October last year.
Many women are taking to streets in protest against sexism around the world.
Massive anti-Trump rallies were launched on January 20 across the US including Washington DC, New York and San Francisco.
Nearly 2 000 Turkish women turned out in Istanbul on November 25 last year to mark the world day of no violence against women. They protested against a noticeable growth in violence against women at home.
Feminism seems to be a wishful thinking in the capitalist countries.
