South Korean public are raising voices to demand the Cheonan warship sinking incident be investigated again.
The South Committee for the Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration and other organizations, former and sitting national assemblymen, religionists, university professors and other personages formed a “preparatory committee of the pan-civil society joint action consultative meeting for disclosing the truth of the Cheonan warship sinking” and issued a special statement which demands an investigation of the cause of the warship sinking again, saying that improved north-south relationship is impossible unless the suspicious incident, the biggest obstacle to inter-Korean dialogue, eased tension in the Korean peninsula, economic cooperation and resumption of exchange, is cleared.
A progressive media outlet, Surprise, recently argued that the truth of the incident should be found without fail to remove the biggest obstacle to inter-Korean fence-mending, while emphasizing the historical significance of the factfinding campaign of the Cheonan sinking. KBC and other broadcasts produced a video show “Tracking 60 Minutes” with newly gathered animation data of the heat monitoring device and CCTV image data at the time of Cheonan sinking and broadcast it from March 28, attracting the focus of the public attention.
The public strongly demands the investigation of the warship sinking again saying the evidence provided by the Lee Myung Bak clan like “number 1” torpedo to describe it as an “act of the north” lacks credibility. They say “not a single piece of objective and scientific evidence has been discovered”, “at the time the formation of investigation team and method of investigation were not transparent and investigation was carried out to dovetail facts” and “it is highly likely to be Lee Myung Bak regime’s forgery”.
Such a message that “we ask the government to investigate again the Cheonan warship sinking to find the cause of the incident” was posted on the Blue House site “Public petition noticeboard”, gathering support from the people of all social spectrum.
Polls show that 70 percent of the south Korean population do not believe the results of the investigation of the Cheonan sinking and a growing number of people demand another inquiry into the truth of the incident.
