Site of Temple Dating Back to Koryo Period Excavated
The site of Kwangbok Temple, remains in the period of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392), was newly excavated in Sadong-ri, Phangyo County, Kangwon Province of the DPRK recently.
The site is in the valley about 2 km away northeast from Sadong-ri seat. Its area is more than 17 000 square meters.
The site is divided into the east section and the west section and each section is surrounded by the gallery site.
In the east section there are sites of gate, tower and Kumdang site which housed main Buddha and lecture site where Buddhism was practiced from the south to the north with the south-north central axis as standard.
The Kumdang site is 21.1 metres in length and 12.7 metres in the side while the lecture site is 52.4 metres in length and 11.9 metres in the side. Their sites are much larger than the similar sites found in Ryongthong Temple in Kaesong City, a temple known as the biggest one in the period of Koryo Kingdom.
The western section is divided into the southern part and the northern part with the middle gallery lying in the east-west direction. In the center of each part is a site of buildings.
The general layout of building is similar to that of Ryongthong Temple just except the position of the central area of the temple.
Excavated there were various relics including bronze spoon, pieces of Koryo celadon.
The History Society and the Archeological Society of the DPRK in their joint meeting scientifically proved that Kwangbok Temple was built in around 11th century when Koryo reigned, based on the layout of the building and the relics and historical data found during the excavation.
