Inter Korean Basketballers Hold Matches

The north-south basketball games for reunification were held amid the soaring atmosphere of national reconciliation and unity after the adoption of the historic Panmunjom Declaration.
The south Korean delegation and team arrived in Pyongyang on July 3, Juche 107 (2018). They were warmly greeted by Won Kil U, vice-minister of Physical Culture and Sports, and other relevant officials at the Pyongyang International Airport.
That day there was a banquet at the Okryu Restaurant to welcome the south Korean guests.
Basketball games took place on July 4 and 5 at the Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Indoor Stadium between the teams formed by mixing northern and southern players and the friendlies between the picked teams.
The Ryugyong Jong Ju Yong Indoor Stadium was overcrowded with Pyongyang citizens, sportspeople and Pyongyang-resident overseas compatriots.
On July 4, prior to the games, speeches were made. Those who took the floor expressed their confidence that the current games would help demonstrate the aspirations and will of the north-south sportspeople to advance in keeping pace with each other at the new starting point of peace and prosperity and share valuable experience between them.
Adding that the games would make a tangible contribution to expanding sports exchanges and promoting national reconciliation and unity, they hoped that the players would fully display their skills and friendship to the fellow countrymen and the world people.
After the congratulatory speech, amid the musical playing Glad to See You, male and female players from the north and south entered the court hand in hand.
The audience burst into cheers and the players made the rounds of the court to return salute. At the games they showed noble sportsmanship in step with each other. Whenever they made an excellent scoring with high techniques and adroit skills, the audience sent them thunderous cheers and applause.
Thanks to the players’ enthusiastic movements and spectators’ cheering the stadium overflowed with a charged atmosphere of national unity and reunification.
At the mixed matches on July 4 between the Peace and Prosperity teams, latter was successful in women’s event, while the men’s made a draw. At the friendly matches the following day, the Blue team won the women’s and the Red the men’s.
The audience waved their hands toward the players who contributed to inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation through basketball matches and sent them warm greetings as well as cheers and applause.
On the evening of July 5, the National Sports Guidance Commission hosted a farewell banquet at the People’s Palace of Culture for the south Korean guests, who visited the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren’s Palace the next morning before leaving Pyongyang.
The basketball matches served as an occasion that showed the will of the north and south sportspeople to support the historic Panmunjom Declaration in practice and the fact that when the north and south are united as one, they would give fuller play to the national dignity and spirit.
