Pyongyang Primary School for Orphans has instructors for extracurricular education besides teachers in charge of classes. All of them are girls in their twenties. The orphans call them “our mothers”, as the latter takes maternal care of the former.

Friday, April 6 2018, rainy before sunny

I felt a chill when I got up yesterday morning. I knew I caught a cold. Miss O In Ok visited me with a medicine. I don’t know how she knew the fact. After taking the medicine, I felt a little better. After school she led me to the clinic to take my temperature. My temperature was normal, but she did not feel relieved. Touching my forehead to see if I have fever, she kept asking about my appetite. At night she embraced me and went into bed together with me. It was a happy night.

On my birthday

Today is Sunday, as well as my birthday. Miss Ham Kuk Hwa gave me a notebook, mechanical pencil and eraser as gifts of my birthday, encouraging me to study harder. At dinnertime, she served me handsomely with my favourite foods, including bread, pancake and rice cake. At the evening recreation party, she personally sang a song for me. My classmates, too, gave me birthday greetings. Miss Ham also had a picture taken with me. Her smiling image reminds me of my deceased mother.

Now is the autumn, with tree leaves falling with a rustle and seasonal birds migrating to seek for a warm nesting place. Autumn wind blows everywhere, but we do not feel cold. It is thanks to Miss Ham Kuk Hwa who takes good care of us with maternal care, without taking a good rest. She always puts in order the quilts when we are in bed and adjusts us when dressing ourselves for outdoors lest the cold wind should chill us. Everyday she washes the dirty clothes of our classmates, irons them out and puts on clean collars. To lighten the burden on our mother, I should be a model as the monitor of the class.

Greeting Mother’s Day

Three days are left till Mother’s Day. So, we are busy preparing for bouquets and writing cards for our mothers. I wrote a poem to make them happy. They devote their all to take maternal care of us lest we should become disheartened and fall ill. The greatest pleasure for them is that we study harder. I will study harder to get full marks everyday and intensify physical training to be an excellent pillar of the prosperous Korea. This is the unanimous will of all my classmates.
