On April 29, Juche 102 (2013), Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un arranged a banquet in honour of the sportspeople and coaches who had distinguished themselves in international competitions.
In the banquet hall he first shook hands with the athlete who had won the gold medal at the 14th Asian Marathon Championship, congratulating the champion on the success in the international contest.
He exchanged greetings with other athletes and coaches. Saying they had demonstrated the honour of their motherland and they should continue to add glory to the country without resting on their laurels, he proposed a toast to their good health.
As they felt ill at ease in front of their Supreme Leader, he asked them each of their names and the events they specialize in, and had officials offer them cups of wine.
With a family atmosphere pervading the banquet hall, Kim Jong Un said emphatically: In order to develop our sports, it is important to develop it on a scientific footing; it is only when sports is supported by science that we can achieve greater successes in sports.
He then continued: There’s difference between the Pyongyang time and that of other countries; I receive sports news mostly at dawn at my desk; whenever I hear the news that our sportspeople won gold medals, I feel rejuvenated and a new strength welling up.
These words moved the players and coaches. It was just his affection and trust that had enabled them to exalt the honour of their country in international competitions, but the Supreme Leader was speaking highly of them for giving him a new strength.
