The Permanent Representative of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) to the United Nations delivered a statement clarifying the position of the government of the DPRK on the issue of reform of the UN Security Council(UNSC) at the informal meeting of the plenary on the intergovernmental negotiations on the question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Council, held on January 29 at the UN headquarters.
He drew the attention to the present reality where the principles of respect to sovereignty, equality and non-intervention in internal affairs are disregarded in an overt manner at the Security Council and the acts of interference in internal affairs, pressure and infringement upon sovereign rights of independent states persist uninterruptedly, and he stated that the UNSC reform should be carried out on the principle of realizing international justice, impartiality and democracy and ensuring full representation of the NAM and other developing countries.
He underlined the DPRK’s strong opposition in particular to Japan’s attempt for obtaining permanent membership of the Security Council – a country that had committed indelible crimes against humanity in the past by invading many Asian countries by force, but have not accepted its crimes until now over 70 years since the end of World War II.
